Should we plan on any items (storage containers, desk sccessories, etc.) being available on move in day at the local Walmart or other sotres? We are trying to avoid hauling so much stuff down with us. Any adive on what is an absolute necessity to have in a dorm room-we've got linens, laptop, printer, fridge, microwave and the like. What else is a must have???IP: Logged |

Last year on move-in day we bought plastic drawers at either Wal-mart or Lowes...Don't remember which. Seemed to be plenty available. Also, a 5 x 7 rug for in front of the bed. And, some milk-crate type storage cubes at Wal-Mart. The cubes were running low but these are fairly standard items at Wal-Mart so they'll get more in. You'll want some additional lighting... My daughter used both a desk lamp and a floor style lamp for by the bed. As far as desk assessories, I'm sure Wal-Mart has plenty on hand but we brought stapler, hole-punch, caddy, etc. with us. Yes, on the egg crate foam for the bed as well as a mattress pad. Can't speak to other Hart specific questions. On the must have list: TP (bring 1 roll then buy more at Wal-Mart) Power Bars and extension cords Assorted Zip Ties also come in handy Microwave Popcorn (this was the only items Wal-Mart was out of that I saw last year) Cable for the TV (approx. 25 foot) Rain Boots and Umbrella My recommendation would be to make a list ahead of time for items you will pick up at Wal-Mart but to bring as much as possible with you.... Wal-Mart is very busy on move-in day.... And, there will be mandatory meetings, etc. on move-in day. One other useful item.... Wal-Mart sells student gift cards - These come in 2 parts.... 1 is the standard 'gift' card that the student keeps and the other part I keep. I can reload using my part and the $$$ are immediately available for the student. Works better than mailing standard gift cards. IP: Logged |

NO! You aren't the only ones moving in who will have the same idea. the local Walmart has only a limited supply of everything and necessary items such as pens and paper may not be restocked for a long time. Keep in mind that the Murray walmart not only caters to the University Students, but the local Murray residents, and the public schools as well. Must haves include ethernet cables, power surge cords, flip flops for shower shoes, cleaning supplies (the rooms are not clean at check in), general school supplies (pens, paper), hangers, quarters for laundry ($2 to wash and dry each load), a more comprehensive list can be found on the housing office's website. Also, your child might want a fan for personal use, the rooms can get quite warm when sharing, especially when they turn the heat on and then it gets warm again. Don't forget an umbrella!IP: Logged | |
