Any helpful hints that anyone can offer to make move in day easier? We are moving in a week early for rush and have been given 2 hours. Is this plenty of time. How much help do most students want from their parents? Is it better to drop off everything and leave or help them set up. Do you recommend any tools needed for moving in? Any information would be greatly appreciated. THANKS!!!

Early move in day was great in 07 as there was plenty of help getting our daughter moved into her dorm room. We stayed around for a while to clean the bathroom and the room a little better, helped her install her computer but then left. Trust me, it was harder for us leaving our only child behind than it was on her seeing us leave. We did come back on Saturday for the new freshmen parents meeting and we brought some stuff that she found out she needed but didn't bring. All went well, and like I said leaving her was harder on us, than it ever was on her.

My daughter will also be moving in early. What do you mean about having 2 hours? We haven't gotten any info yet.

Former First Year Leader and current residential adviser here, 2 hours should be plenty of time to get moved in and setup. There is plenty of help around for the move-in process. You spend more time setting up the room than anything. As a freshman and observing other freshmen move in over the years, I know that students are just fine with their parents helping them move in and get everything in order. It's kind-of a part of the whole process that helps them feel welcome and ready. Once all the dust has settled, they're pretty well ready to be on their own and say goodbye. Many residential colleges have either dollies or wal-mart carts around for lugging things. What building will you be moving into?

My son will be moving into Richmond College. So we will stay and help him move in and setup, leave and then go back for the parents reception that night? Is there anything else for the parents to do that night or the next day. My husband and I are trying to decide when to return home, Saturday evening or Sunday. Thanks for your help.

My daughter will be moving into Hart can you tell me if they have dressers or drawers in the closet space? Trying to make sure we bring the things she will need for move in.

Following the parent reception on the President's Lawn, there are no other events/meetings particularly aimed at the parents. Obviously you can stay as long as needed to set up and such, but the majority of parents leave following the Parent Reception.

LCHSmom, you can count on a set of drawers in Hart. You won't have to buy any clothing storage. No worries.

my daughter is moving in early for rush on the 13th. They have given a move in time from 9-11 am that day. I know the girls have a rush event that afternoon so perhaps the time frame was set up for that reason. my daughter will be moving into Elizabeth College. Due to being 6 hours away I am unable to stay for the weekend events. I figured that parent's weekend is just a month later and that would provide an opportunity to buy additional things and help get further organized if needed.

I helped my daughter set up last year. We are 5 hours away and I stayed 2 nights (the night before move-in and the night of move-in).

For those moving in early, there is plenty of time over the next couple days to get organized. This year, my daughter will move in on 8/12 and I do not plan on staying longer than the initial haul it all up to her room.

I expect she will NOT take nearly as much 'stuff' with her this year. I'll probably only stay long enough to make sure the fridge works....

As far as staying/helping or not.... really depends on the student. Even though my daughter is ultra-independent....she liked that I helped get her settled. We had several items on a list to pick up at Wal-Mart after arriving rather than hauling 5 hours down....(TP, paper-towels/plates/utinsils, etc.)

No tools are really needed for move-in. I did make a small tool-box with a few necessities that I thought would be useful (hammer, pliers, screw-drivers, etc.) The only item really needed for suite-style dorms is TP.... there will NOT be any in the bathroom unless you have with you. We had packed a single roll to get through until we made a Wal-Mart run.

There should be plenty of time to get organized on Thursday and Friday before the rest of the freshman arrive on Saturday.

The beginning of this post was actually last summer. I know last year, housing was late getting assignments out but we still had plenty of time to coordinate with roommate, etc.

Plenty that can be packed now rather than waiting....

Tendency with freshman is to overpack (my daughter was guilty also!!!)... Take only most favorite clothes...

On the must have list....Rain Boots and Umbrella!!!

Are any of you parents with incoming freshman staying overnight on Saturday this year? When we went to Summer O they said something about parents staying overnight and returning to campus on Sunday morning for something. I can't remember what it was. If it is something most parents will attend then we will stay and attend but if not then we won't. From reading the previous posts from last year's parents it doesn't sound like many stayed over night on Saturday.

I have a sophmore this year. We live 5+ hours away. We drove down on Friday and stayed over. Dorms opened at 10:00. I had hotel reservation for both nights just in case.

Moving in actually was very smooth. The dorms all have lots of helpers on hand to get boxes, etc. moved up to the rooms. I let my daughter decide if I helped her set up her room or not. We worked together to get her unpacked and organized and made a few trips to Wal-Mart and Lowes (carpet, storage drawers, soda, TP, cable, etc.) We went out to lunch at Sonic (rather than eating in at Winslow)with another family we had met at Summer O.

The kids will have a mandatory meeting on Saturday afternoon that coincides with a parents meeting at Curris. Last year they had a 'taste of Murray' in the evening with lots of samples, etc. It was jam-packed with long lines to get food and little to no seating available and very loud.....We chose to go out once again for evening meal.

So, it sort of depends on your student and on how much stuff requires assembly. Doesn't hurt to have a reservation. You can always cancel it. My daughter's roommate didn't move in until the next day so she was alone in her room that first night. I stayed at the hotel and checked with her in the morning to see if she needed anything.

This year she's moving in early.... We'll drive down the night before and I will make sure she has a good start on settling in and I'll take off for home. Of course, she's taking much less this year and nothing will need to be assembled.

We live 2 1/2 hours away and are staying over Saturday night. Then we can go out Sunday for anything we might need to pick up or just have time to look around town, even if our daughter doesn't go with us. We've only been there once, so it would be nice to see more of the area. I saw the information on moving in, including info on parking, somewhere. Anyone know where to find it?

You'll get a lot of info with housing notice. You'll be able to pull up to the dorms to unload..... then move car to stadium parking lot... they have shuttles operating all day between dorms and stadium lot.....

There will be plenty of help on hand to move the items up to the rooms.... Amazing how quick and easy it is...... They (MSU) do a great job at coordinating move-in....

If you get a chance... There is a little cafe called Dumplins (on 641 south of campus) open for breakfast and lunch....very yummy!!!!

Can I assume this housing notice will come in the mail? Very much in the dark as the housing info online is sparse and better information would assist in shopping and preparing for move in.

We are driving from Louisville and have a reservation for Saturday night-just in case

Since move in is for 10am-we'd have to get up at 4:30am...just too long a day for those of us who are no longer in our teens haha!

We plan on staying for parent stuff and then maybe a nice dinner out with DD ONE last time (for a few weeks anyway!!) LOL

PTOWN: I agree, finding out anythng about housing has been the hardest part of the college process. I'm not sure why everything has to be so difficult and drug out. Without this site, we would feel totally clueless about what to expect for move-in. As it is, we are still 95% in the dark! Good luck, I'm sure we'll get our kids in the right room. After that, they're on their own!

It will all work out. There is a list of what to bring on the housing site:

Both the FAQs page and the What to bring pages have a lot of information. Here is a link:
http://www.murraystate.edu/secsv/hous/

The 'what to bring' page still says George Foreman grills....These are no longer allowed.

If you are bringing a TV....You will need to provide your own cable (to attach to cable outlet in wall). Wal-mart sells this but they were running low when we got ours last year.

Also, missing on the what to bring page is 'rain boots'. Vast majority of kids get these to keep their feet dry. When it rains....it pours.... nothing worse than sitting in class for hours with wet feet...

Start a list now of what you plan to buy at Wal-mart or Lowes.... and keep it handy as you unpack. You'll likely be adding to it.

Wal-mart has a 'student' gift card that comes in 2 pieces.... the student gets the gift card part and the parents get the other half. I could load $$$ on my half whenever I desired and the $$$ was instantly available to my daughter. This was convenient as we are 5 hours away and mailing gift cards would have been slow.

It all works out and at the end of the day campus is pretty quiet. Anything that is forgotten can be mailed (TV remote controls), delivered at parents weekend or purchased at a local store.

Save a bit of time to go to the bookstore and pick up the required Murray Mom and Murray Dad shirts!!!
