MSU profs will present research to Geological Society of America
Murray State University professors Dr. Lara Homsey and Dr. Peter Whaley will present research at the 118th annual meeting of the Geological Society of America on Oct. 22-25, 2006. Approximately 6,200 geoscientists are expected to attend this event.
According to the Geological Society of America website, the GSA encourages the pursuit of knowledge of the Earth, the planets and life. The GSA, 19,000 members strong, includes teachers, scientists, students and professionals. The 2006 annual meeting of the Geological Society of America, held at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia, coincides with the 300th birthday of Benjamin Franklin, one of the nation's most renowned scientists, and one who is remembered for his support of the sciences and the open exchange of information.
To carry on that tradition of exchanging information, Homsey, assistant professor of geosciences, and Whaley, professor emeritus of geosciences, will be representing Murray State at the annual Geological Society of America meeting. Homsey's presentation will discuss research on cave environments in the field of archaeological geology. Whaley plans to discuss Murray State University's faculty seminars in Regensburg, Germany. His explanation of how learning about geology helps non-science faculty to better advise their students falls into the GSA's geoscience education category and addresses increasing enrollment of undergraduates in introductory geology.
